25–27 August 2015
5th Arvo Pärt Centre Film Evenings

This was the fifth time the Arvo Pärt Centre film evenings took place at the end of August, and this year the centre presented five films that prominently feature Arvo Pärt’s music. To celebrate the composer’s 80th birthday, the film nights opened with a world premiere. It was the first time this full length documentary about Arvo Pärt was shown. The film “Even If I Lose Everything” by director Dorian Supin is an intimate and delicate portrait of the composer, turning 80 this year – a view into the maestro’s life philosophy, creative background, and simple moments with his family and close friends.

In addition to premiering the new film, the programme featured another film, the Estonian puppet film “Master” by Riho Unt, which has already enjoyed positive reception due to its masterful execution – it is a powerful allegory based on Friedebert Tuglas’ novella “Popi and Huhuu”. The 18-minute film features an intense combination of music by Lepo Sumera and Arvo Pärt.

The programme also featured a third Estonian premiere “The Club”, a film by the Chilean producer Pablo Larrain, which was awarded a Silver Bear at the 65th Berlinale. International media has repeatedly praised the way Pärt’s music is used to create a particular atmosphere in the film.

The Swiss documentary artist Christian Frei who started working with Arvo Pärt’s music more then 15 years ago presented two of his award-winning films in Tallinn and discussed his choice of music. The screenings included the 2001 Oscar nominated “War Photographer” and “The Giant Buddhas”, a film about the Taliban destruction of sculptures of Buddha in Bamyan, Afghanistan, which has been shown extensively in film festivals around the world.

The 5th Arvo Pärt Centre Film Evenings took place 25–27 August in the Sõprus cinema.

The artistic director of the film evenings is Kaarel Kuurmaa.
The tickets were sold from 7th of August through Piletilevi.
