Description

Arrival Symphony – Tõnu Kaljuste and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra

After an unexpected break in the world of music, it’s time for something extraordinary!

The world-renowned conductor Tõnu Kaljuste and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra will be delighting audiences with 10 concerts held in Estonian churches from Otepää to Tallinn in July and August.

The concerts intertwine the works of Joseph Haydn and Arvo Pärt: Haydn’s Symphony No. 45 (the “Farewell” Symphony) and four compositions by Arvo Pärt, Spiegel im Spiegel, Orient & Occident, Mein Weg and Trisagion.

Contrary to tradition, the performance of Haydn’s symphony will begin with the last movement (Adagio). The musicians will not be exiting the stage, but entering. For this occasion, Tõnu Kaljuste adapted the performance to reflect today’s situation, where musicians are starting to return to the stage all around the world.

During the emergency period, musicians had to cancel their concerts, but many earlier recordings were made available on radio and television. A concert of the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir in Paris, featuring the works of Arvo Pärt, was broadcast on the TV channel Mezzo HD more than ten times, attracting large audiences. In other words, international reach was not interrupted during quarantine.

With the summer tour, we will also be celebrating the 85th birthday of the composer Arvo Pärt.
The soloists performing: Leho Karin (cello), Marrit Gerretz-Traksmann (piano) and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra conducted by Tõnu Kaljuste.

The concert is organised by the Tallinn Philharmonic Society, with support from the City of Tallinn, the Estonian Ministry of Culture and the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.
