In mid-May, Estonia will pay a state visit to Germany during which a particular musical gift will be presented by Toomas Hendrik Ilves, the President of the Republic of Estonia. One of the most important events of the cultural programme will be Arvo Pärt’s composer concert on 19 May at the Berlin Konzerthaus, where a beautiful selection of Pärt’s music will be performed by his long-standing creative partners the world renowned Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and Tõnu Kaljuste. The concert will also commemorate Arvo Pärt’s 80th birthday.
Berlin, the destination of the state visit, is a city where the composer lived for thirty years and wrote the majority of his most important works. That is why the programme will in many ways symbolically feature “Te Deum” – celebrating the beginning of Tõnu Kaljuste and Arvo Pärt’s work together – as well as “Adam’s Lament”, which crowns more than twenty years of creative collaboration and resulted in a Grammy Award for Tõnu Kaljuste in 2014. In addition to these two masterpieces, the performance will include the wonderful “Salve Regina”, written for the 75th birthday of Dr. Hubert Luthe, Bishop of Essen Cathedral and for the 1150th anniversary of the city of Essen, as well as one of the earliest, yet most performed orchestral works “Cantus in Memoriam of Benjamin Britten”.
The concert is organized in collaboration with the Concert Agency, Hans Adler, the Office of the President of the Republic of Estonia, the Estonian Embassy in Berlin and the Arvo Pärt Centre.
