Short description

During the sixties and the seventies, Pärt actively composed film soundtracks, which included the music for nearly twenty puppet and animated films. One of his first jobs at the Tallinnfilm studio was writing the music for Heino Pars’ puppet-animation film The Little Motor-Scooter in 1962.

The film’s main character is a brave little motor-scooter, who falls out of a truck’s cargo of toys and has to find the way to children on his own, wandering through forests and the city. Pärt wrote an imaginative audio layer for the film’s colourful scenes, which also includes one song. For the 2015 collection Songs from Childhood, the song was arranged by Tauno Aints, and Eno Raud’s text was complemented with verses penned by Leelo Tungal.

THE LITTLE MOTOR-SCOOTER
Lyrics by Eno Raud and Leelo Tungal
Translation by Paul Hillier

Ev'ryone knows me,
I am a marvellous machine,
Motor-toy and plaything
On which kids like to be seen.
From the car-shop bigger motors
May have been brought home,
I was made for children only,
Wherever they roam.

I am small, but I am lucky,
And I am quite brave;
Don't get tir'd, 'cos on long trips
I know how to behave.
There's no danger, 'cos for speeding
I do not get booked;
No risk, 'cos by overtaking
I do not get cooked!

I do not go fast, but if you’d
Like to come along
Wear your jacket, button up,
And put your helmet on.
Check the wheels – are they fine?
Is there petrol in the tank?
Jump on, sit still, and please give
My engine one more crank.

I am small, but I am lucky,
And what's more I'm brave!
Driving through the countryside
I know how to behave.
I can't catch the other bikes –
I am a scooter small.
But instead I've time
To look around and see it all.

VÄIKE MOTOROLLER
Sõnad Eno Raud ja Leelo Tungal

Olen väike rõõmus masin –
kes siis mind ei tea!
Mootoriga mänguasi
laste jaoks on hea!
Autopoest on ikka toodud
päris rollereid.
Laste jaoks ma olen loodud,
sestap vajan neid!

Olen väike, aga südi,
vapper on mu meel.
Ei ma väsi ega tüdi
oma pikal teel.
Ära sellest meelt veel heida,
kui su teel on oht!
Katsu aga üles leida
oma õige koht!

Ripa-rapa küll ei lähe
sõiduteele ma.
Sõber, pane kiiver pähe,
teisiti ei saa!
Vaata, kas on korras rattad,
paagis on bensiin –
siis ma ilma tõrkumata
rändama sind viin.

Olen väike, aga südi,
vapper on mu meel.
Ei ma väsi ega tüdi
oma pikal teel.
Suurematest jään küll maha,
mis sa teha saad!
See-eest võime rohkem näha
linna kui ka maad.

DER KLEINE MOTORROLLER
Text von Eno Raud und Leelo Tungal
Übersetzt von Cornelius Hasselblatt

Bin ein kleiner lust’ger Roller –
wer kennt mich denn nicht!
Bin ein Spielzeug mit dem Motor.
Jedes Kind liebt mich!
Kommen aus dem Autoladen
wohl die echten Roller.
Doch die Kinder woll’n mich haben,
finden mich viel toller.

Ich bin klein, doch auch ganz eifrig,
tapfer ist mein Geist.
Frisch und munter immer bin ich
auf der langen Reis’.
Lass dich dadurch nicht verzagen,
kommt ein Hindernis!
Du musst einfach weiter fragen,
find’st dein’ Platz gewiss!

Einfach so die Straße rauffahrn,
das geht sicher nicht.
Freundchen, setz den Helm dir erst auf,
anders geht es nicht!
Sind die Reifen auch ganz heile,
ist Benzin im Tank –
dann fahr ich dich eine Weile
überall entlang.

Ich bin klein, doch auch ganz eifrig,
tapfer ist mein Geist.
Frisch und munter immer bin ich
auf der langen Reis’.
Ach, die Großen, die sind schneller,
das ist ja bekannt!
Aber dafür sehn wir vielmehr,
von der Stadt, vom Land.
