Short description

At the beginning of his path as a composer, in 1950s and 1960s, Pärt wrote many children’s songs, piano pieces, and music for plays and animated films. During those years he was involved with several children’s studios and theatres, being the piano accompanist and musical designer. Most of his music for children came about by way of direct improvisation at rehearsals and were only later given their more polished forms. I Am Already Big is probably the most well-known among Pärt’s children’s songs. Even many adults of today certainly remember from their own childhoods it’s opening words „I’m off to kindergarten – not a baby in a crib!“ The song was written for the youngest section of the Estonian Radio children’s ensemble at the request of Kiira Kahn, then editor of children’s programmes at Estonian Radio. As Kahn recalls, the song was written completely spontaneously and using lines from a poem found by chance before a practice.

I Am Already Big belongs to his 1960 cycle Tykes’ Songs, later titled Five Children’s Songs, as well as to the 2015 collection Songs from Childhood. Both are dedicated to Pärt’s mother.

I AM ALREADY BIG
Lyrics by Silva Kaputikjan
Translation by Paul Hillier

I go to kindergarten,
No longer just a kid!
And at home I now hearten
Across the table peek.

I am no little baby,
I work as hard as men.
I dye and paint and glue, too,
Fine pictures just for you.

I put my doll, her dresses
All into the big press.
And when I cry, not messy,
No! – On with work I press.

I am no little baby

I go to kindergarten,
No longer just a kid.
And at home I now hearten
Across the table peek.

MINA OLEN JUBA SUUR
Sõnad Silva Kaputikjan
Tõlkinud Juhan Saar

Käin juba lasteaias,
ei ole väike ma,
ka kodus lauast laiast
võin üle vaadata.

Ei ole enam beebi,
vaid töötan nagu mees,
ma maalin, värvin, kleebin

Käin juba lasteaias,

võin üle vaadata.

Ei ole enam beebi,
vaid töötan nagu mees,
ma maalin, värvin, kleebin
ja kauneid pilte teen.

Ma nuku, nukukleidid –
kõik kappi panen nad.
Kui nutan, nutan veidi.
Ei! Parem töötan ma.

Ei ole enam beebi,
...

Käin juba lasteaias,
ei ole väike ma,
ka kodus lauast laiast
võin üle vaadata.

ICH BIN SCHON GROß
Text von Silva Kaputikjan
Übersetzt von Cornelius Hasselblatt

Ich geh schon in die Krippe,
bin gar nicht mehr so klein,
zu Haus, am großen Tische,
sitze ich schon ganz allein.

Ich bin nicht mehr ein Baby,
ich arbeit' wie ein Mann,
zeichne, streiche, klebe,
mal schöne Bilder dann.

Das Spielzeug und was sonst noch,
kommt alles in den Schrank.
Wein ich, dann wein ich kaum noch.
Nein, an die Arbeit dann.

Ich bin nicht mehr ein Baby,

Ich geh schon in die Krippe,
bin gar nicht mehr so klein,
zu Haus, am großen Tische,
sitze ich schon ganz allein.
