Short description

As a student, Pärt earned pocket money by accompanying on piano the theatre club of the Tallinn Palace of the Pioneers (now the Kullo hobby centre). He came to the theatre at the invitation of Salme Lauren, who was then director of the theatre club and for whose translated, written, and staged plays Pärt composed a large amount of music in those years. Among those pieces are his earliest known works – composed more than half a century ago over the period 1956–1960, their exact dates unknown.

Frogs was written for Lauren’s play Adventure in the Woods and they belong to Pärt’s 1960 cycle Tykes’ Songs, later titled Five Children’s Songs, as well as to the 2015 collection Songs from Childhood. Both are dedicated to his mother.

FROGS
Lyrics by Salme Lauren
Translation by Reet Sool

Oh when it's raining, drip, drip, drop,
The earth gets wet, we flip, flip, flop,
The frogs then party in a line
And praise the weather; it's so fine!

The pools are large and everywhere
The frogs have but a single care:
To splash in every one a lot,
And have a good time that won’t stop.

Head forward to the pool hip-hop,
The water’s bubbling plip-plip-plop.
Oh it’s the best fun that we know,
The life of frogs is one big show!

KONNAD
Sõnad Salme Lauren

Kui sajab vihma tilk, tilk, tilk
ja maa saab märjaks silmapilk,
siis konnarahvas pidu peab
ja rõõmu tunneb ilmast heast.

On lombid laiad igal pool
ja konnapere ainus hool
on nendes kõigis supelda
ja mõnusasti hullata.

Pea ees siis lompi sulps ja sulp…

Ei lõbu paremat me tea,
küll on see konna elu hea!

DIE FRÖSCHE
Text von Salme Lauren
Übersetzt von Cornelius Hasselblatt

Wenn Regen fällt, dann tropf, tropf, tropf,
und schnell wird nass das ganze Land,
dann ist bei allen Fröschen Fest,
solch Wetter sie frohlocken lässt.

Gibt’s Pfützen hier und Pfützen da,
Familie Frosch, für sie ist klar:
sofort in all die Pfützen rein
und herrlich plantschen, au wie fein.

Kopfüber in die Pfütz’ getaucht
das Wasser spritzt uns auf den Bauch.
Viel größer kann die Lust nicht sein,
die Frösche leben immer fein!
