Short description

Scala cromatica or Trio piccolo for violin, violoncello and piano is dedicated to Bálint András Varga, a musicologist who worked for many years in the publishing company Universal Edition. On the occasion of his retirement a farewell concert was held at Musikverein, Vienna, in November 2007, where the Wiener Klaviertrio premiered thirteen works from various composers commissioned especially for that night. One of them was Scala cromatica, a miniature by Pärt. The central musical material of the piece is a descending chromatic scale for almost 4 octaves, colored by tintinnabuli voices of violin and piano. This section is framed by a short introduction and a coda, both based on the musical letters of the name Bálint András Varga (B-flat-A, A-D-A-Es, A-G-A). This…
