Short description

This work for choir or soloists with organ was composed in 1977, when after a long creative pause, Pärt created many of his most important tintinnabuli pieces, such as Tabula rasa, Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten, Fratres, etc. Cantate Domino, which is based on Psalm 96 (95), is the only one of them composed in major key, and one could easily say that it is one of the most joyful works in Pärt’s tintinnabuli-music. Two pairs of voices, soprano/alto and tenor/bass, move throughout almost the entire composition step by step in opposite directions, while the organ plays the notes of triads, creating various combinations with vocal parts.

Psalm 96 (95)

Cantate Domino canticum novum;
Cantate Domino omnis terra.

Cantate Domino, et benedicite nomini eius;
annuntiate de die in diem salutare eius.

Annuntiate inter gentes gloriam eius;
in omnibus populis mirabilia eius.

Quoniam magnus Dominus, et laudibilis nimis;
terribilis est super omnes deos.

Quoniam omnes dii gentium daemonia;
Dominus autem caelos fecit.

Confessio et pulchritudo in conspectu eius;
sanctimonia et magnificentia in sanctificatione eius.

Afferte Domino patriae gentium,
afferte Domino gloriam et honorem;

Afferte Domino gloriam nomine eius.
Tollite hostias, et introite in atria eius;
adorate Dominum in atrio sancto eius.
Commoveatur a facie eius universa terra;

dicite in gentibus quia Dominus regnavit.
Eternim correxit orbem terrae qui non commovebitur…

Eternim correxit orbem terrae qui non commovebitur;
iudicabit populus in aequitate.

Laetentur caeli, et exsultet terra;
commoveatur mare, et plenitudo eius;

Gaudebunt campi, et omnia quae in eis sunt.
Tunc exsultabunt omnia ligna silvarum
a facie Domini, quia venit; quoniam venit iudicare terram.
Iudicabit orbem terrae in aequitate,
et populos in veritate sua.

O come, let us sing unto the Lord a new song:
sing unto the Lord, all the earth.

Sing unto the Lord, bless His name;
shew forth His alvation from day to day.

Declare His glory among the heathen,
His wonders among all people.

For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised:
His is to be feared above all gods.

For all the gods of the nations are idols:
but the Lord made the heavens.

Honour and majesty are before Him:
strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.

Give unto the Lord, O ye kindreds of the people,
give unto the Lord glory and strength.

Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name:
bring an offering, and come into His courts.

Say among the heathen that the Lord reigneth:
the world also shall be established that it shall not
be moved:
He shall judge the people righteously.

Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad;
let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof.

Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein:
then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice
before the Lord: for He cometh to judge the earth:
He shall judge the world with righteousness,
and the people with His truth.
