La Sindone for violin and symphony orchestra was composed in 2019 based on an orchestra piece of the same name which Arvo Pärt had written in response to a commission from Enzo Restagno, organiser of the Settembre Musica festival in Turin in 2006. In the new version of La Sindone, a solo violin part has been added to the orchestra with the playing of the violinist Vadim Repin particularly in mind.

La Sindone (Italian for “shroud”) refers to the Shroud of Turin stored in Turin Cathedral. In some inexplicable way, the image of the face and body of a crucified man have appeared imprinted upon the cloth. It is believed that the body of Christ was wrapped in this shroud. The Shroud of Turin is one of the most important, but also one of the most mystical Christian relics; many circumstances around it still lack a scientific explanation.
This orchestral composition is in one movement and is a musical reflection and journey in the footsteps of this religious mystery. The three sections of the work could be conditionally linked to the death of Christ: crucifixion, entombment and resurrection.
The composition is dedicated to Vadim Repin, Andres Mustonen and Enzo Restagno, the former artistic director of the SettembreMusica festival in Turin.
Arvo Pärt has said about the new version of the work:
“The collaboration between Vadim Repin and Andres Mustonen has given me a whole new vision for this work, which I then tried to realise in this version. I very much appreciate Repin’s highly sensitive performance as well as the excellent perception I have witnessed in the work of conductor Andres Mustonen during our long-standing collaboration. I am happy to entrust this premiere to them.”
