Description
Esteemed Lithuanian pianist Lukas Gedvilas will present a solo concert at the Arvo Pärt Centre, showcasing the piano as a truly versatile instrument with endless possibilities. The second movement of Beethoven’s piano sonata highlights the instrument’s potential to perform operatic music — where the Viennese classical composer parodies the brilliant cadenzas, ornaments, and bel canto elements of Italian opera. In Chopin’s famous barcarolle, one can sense the composer’s affinity for operatic style, but it also serves as a brilliant example of distinctly pianistic music, expressed through both technical mastery and unique tonal possibilities. The programme concludes with Maurice Ravel’s “Le Tombeau de Couperin,” a work in the form of a French Baroque suite, which convincingly demonstrates that the original solo piano version is no less powerful than the later orchestral arrangement.
Lukas Gedvilas has won the Grand Prix at the international competition “Kaunas Sonorum” in Lithuania (2019), first place at the international piano competition “Resonances” in France (2018), and first place in the Nijolė and Jonas Dėdinai Scholarship Competition in Lithuania (2021). He is a renowned chamber music partner and collaborates with various ensembles. Gedvilas completed his undergraduate studies at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre and earned his master’s degree with distinction from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre under the guidance of Professor Ivari Ilja.
