Description

The Arvo Pärt Centre continues the “Listening in” series of events focusing on consciously listening to music. We invite the audience to immerse themselves in the music and travel behind the sounds to discover the spiritual and musical context associated with the creation of the compositions.

This time, the spotlight is on Arvo Pärt’s most extensive a cappella choral work “Kanon pokajanen”, composed in 1997 for the text of the Canon of Repentance. We will discuss the genesis of the work and explore what the archive materials at the Arvo Pärt Centre have to reveal. What traces of the creative process are hidden in the composer’s sketchbooks and diagrams? Which other works has the text of the Canon of Repentance influenced over time? How has the interpretation of the piece evolved over time? Additionally, we will listen to various parts of the masterpiece from the 1998 ECM Records album, performed by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir with conductor Tõnu Kaljuste.

The exploration of the work will be guided by Hele-Mai Poobus from the Arvo Pärt Centre.
