24.04.2023

For the third year running, the Arvo Pärt Centre is awarding resident scholarships to artists in residence to provide a calm and inspiring environment for creative activities and finding new ideas. This year’s recipients are Estonian writer and translator Indrek Koff and German composer Sophia Jani.

“This year we received 154 applications, almost twice as many as in previous years. Choosing among equally strong candidates was an exceptionally difficult task. Both scholarship recipients stand out for their consistently high level of artistic work, while also directing their energy to educating and inspiring young people,” said Anu Kivilo, Managing Director of the Arvo Pärt Centre.

Indrek Koff is a versatile writer, prolific children’s author and a translator from French, Portuguese and English. Since 2003, he has been the manager of Mr Tea & Mrs Coffee LP (formerly known as Indrek Koff’s Translation House).

Sophia Jani, an internationally active composer, has obtained a master’s degree in composition from the composition class of Prof. David Lang and Prof. Martin Bresnick at Yale University, USA. In addition to her active work as a composer, Sophia Jani is one of the creators and promoters of “Feet Become Ears”, a chamber music festival bringing together young musicians.

This year, the Arvo Pärt Centre received 154 applications from 36 countries around the world, from Europe to Latin America and Asia. This year, two scholarships were awarded, one for music and one for other artistic disciplines. The residency lasts from one to four weeks, and the scholarship covers the resident’s transportation costs, accommodation in the nearby LaSpa hotel and includes a daily allowance. The Arvo Pärt Arvo Pärt Centre has been awarding residency scholarships from 2021.

The creative room at the Arvo Pärt Centre can also be used for a fee outside of the scholarship programme by filling out an application on the Centre’s website: https://www.arvopart.ee/en/residency/.
